José Taborda
José Taborda, born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1994.
Holds a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts University of Lisbon, also studied Fine Arts at the BAUHAUS Universität in Weimar, Germany.

José Taborda challenges the reliability and malleability of perception, cognition and memory through multidisciplinary media. He utilizes immersive or interactive installations to expand preconceived notions about the sensorial system. Through constant research and experimentation with different fields such as mechanics, optics, sound, neuroscience and biology, Taborda is able to materialize his works with a wide-range of technical and material solutions with fewer physical restraints.
“José Taborda explores the public's questioning through sensory provocations. His installations start from the combination of built and prefabricated elements, with other mechanical and digital elements, often resulting in works that defy the limits of perception.
Antoni Tàpies argued that in art, as in the course of a magic trick, the viewer must be a believer, to the point of ignoring that it is only an illusion, so that his experience can be full. José Taborda in his works explores, in a somewhat ironic way, the fallibility of our perceptive capacity, constantly resorting to two movements proper to magic: that of revealing and that of hiding." Taborda participated in Residency Unlimited (New York); the 71st edition of Jeune Creátion at Fondation Fiminco (Paris); FUSO International Videoart Festival at MAAT Museum (Lisbon); New Beginnings, VOGUE Magazine; WIMBA, Steneby Konsthal (Sweden), etc. Also taking part in multiple projects such as Bienal da Maia (Maia); MINA at the National Museum of Natural History and Science; Bauhaus 100th Anniversary edition (Berlin); Paralaxe Observatorio (Porto); Gerador Festival among others.
Taborda exhibits regularly in Portugal and abroad, with previous solo exhibitions including: Duo A line has two sides, Belém (2024); Augenblick, Eigenheim Weimar(2023); Faster and Faster, New York (2023); Wing Walking, Eigenheim Gallery, Berlin (2021); 149,597,870 KM in 7 steps, Ocua Gallery (2021); Elástico, Zaratan, Lisbon (2019); Polpa, Graça Brandão Gallery (2018); NOTLÜGEN, Weimar (2017).

As the winner of the 1st Prize A.J. Millennium BCP Foundation - CDAP Prize, Taborda was granted an Artist residency at Atelier Solar (Madrid) with the support of Millennium BCP Foundation and the CDAP Foundation.
Selected for Residency Unlimited NYC 2023 – was awarded the FLAD Grant from the Luso-American Cooperation Foundation. In the project he developed, met with Professors, Researchers, Musicians and Physicists and Neuroscientists from multiple institutions such as Harvard University, Columbia University, Zuckerman Institute, Oxford University (UK), Cornell University, Julliard. New York University (NYU) and Princeton University to develop new solutions in the field of Perception and Cognition.
He also recently participated in a residency at Weilandpark Gärtnerhaus with the support of the Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringende in preparation for his solo exhibition AUGENBLICK (blink of an eye) at Eigenheim Gallery Weimar/Berlin. Selected for a residency at Cité des Arts, Paris.

José Taborda é licenciado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa e estudou Belas-Artes na Bauhaus Universität, em Weimar, Alemanha.
Foi distinguido com o 1.º Prémio Fundação Millennium BCP – Prémio C.D.A.P., o 1.º Prémio de Escultura D. Fernando e o Prémio Bauhaus Essentials.
José Taborda desafia a fiabilidade e a maleabilidade da perceção, da cognição e da memória através de uma prática multidisciplinar. Utiliza instalações imersivas ou interativas para expandir noções pré-concebidas sobre o sistema sensorial. Através de uma investigação contínua e da experimentação com diferentes áreas como a mecânica, a ótica, o som, a neurociência e a biologia, Taborda materializa o seu trabalho com uma diversidade de soluções técnicas e materiais, superando muitas das limitações físicas.

Como vencedor do 1.º Prémio Fundação Millennium BCP – CDAP, Taborda realizou uma residência artística no Atelier Solar (Madrid), com o apoio da Fundação Millennium BCP e da Fundação CDAP.
Selecionado para a Residency Unlimited NYC 2023, recebeu uma bolsa da Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD). Nesse projeto, reuniu-se com professores, investigadores, músicos, físicos e neurocientistas de várias instituições como Harvard University, Columbia University, Zuckerman Institute, Oxford University (Reino Unido), Cornell University, Juilliard School, New York University (NYU) e Princeton University, para desenvolver novas soluções na área da perceção e da cognição.
Recentemente participou numa residência no Weilandpark Gärtnerhaus, com o apoio da Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringen, em preparação para a sua exposição individual AUGENBLICK (blink of an eye) na Galeria Eigenheim Weimar/Berlim. Foi também selecionado para uma residência na Cité des Arts, em Paris.
