Francisca Carvalho

Francisca Carvalho was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1981.

Her work is based on the manipulation of symbols (and signs) from different geographies, which she has experienced, assimilated and digested, translating them into collages, drawings, patterns, texts, paintings and textiles. Carvalho is trained in painting, engraving and philosophy. In 2009 she completed a degree in Philosophy at the UNL (Lisbon) and in  2016 the MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore MD), with a Fundação Carmona e Costa / Fulbright scholarship. She believes in deconstruction and craftsmanship, learning curves, experimentation, skill and deskill as modes of shared freedom and self-provocation. Since 2018 she has been carrying out research in India into colour as matter, specifically natural dyeing practices in the regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
