Garage - sometimes you can see much more (2009-2011)

The large-scale video installation Garage - sometimes you can see much more (2009-2011) starts in the dark. The sense sharpen, then suddenly comes the rattling, mechanical movement of a rolling door. Like a diaphragm between two dimensions, the shutter opens onto a view of the horizon and the sea. With echoes of Edward Hopper’s Room by the Sea (1951), but with a rugged contemporaneity, the work is a portal to enchantment.

Giovanni Ozzola is a multidisciplinary artist working with photography, video as well as with engraving on slate and sculpture casting. Sensitive towards the phenomenon of light and its various physical characteristics, the artist’s main thematic interests lie in conceptualizing and representing infinitude and exploration — both geographical and introspective.

Selected institutional solo exhibitions include Fosun Foundation, Shanghai (2019); the Basilica de San Francisco de Asís, Havana (2018); District Six Museum, Cape Town (2016); and Centro Arti Visive Pescheria, Pesaro (2011). Selected group exhibitions include the Quadriennale di Roma (2025); Chengdu Biennale (2023); MAC-USP, São Paulo (2021); Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2018); Manifesta 12, Palermo (2018); Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2014); and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2003).
