Carina Brandes (Braunschweig, 1982) is a German artist whose photographic practice investigates the body, gesture, and performativity through a raw, mysterious, and physically charged aesthetic. Working almost exclusively in black and white, Brandes stages actions at the edge of instinct and intimacy, creating images that oscillate between the feral, the ritualistic, and the dreamlike.
Often photographed in outdoor or industrial environments, her images evoke tension, dark humor, and visceral presence. Drawing from diverse influences — including the cinematic expressionism of Ingmar Bergman and the work of Francesca Woodman — Brandes has developed a distinct visual language in which the human figure appears both vulnerable and untamed.
