Em fear less, música de Fred Again... e Sampha, o verso principal repete de forma quase incessante “I fear less with you on the passenger side”. Tomando este verso como mote (e parte como título), esta exposição questiona a presença do outro no banco ao lado durante um percurso: não como conforto sentimental, mas como condição existencial. O medo não desaparece: diminui. E diminui porque alguém escolheu estar ali (ou foi escolhido?), lado a lado, no meio do trânsito e da noite, e das palavras que faltaram. Onfray (2019) diria que essa presença pressupõe eleição, e que a eleição é em si mesma um ato de conhecimento. Um lugar no carro não se ocupa por acaso, ocupa-se por uma razão – mesmo que essa razão só se perceba completamente depois da viagem ter terminado.
Passenger Side não propõe uma narrativa de superação nem um mapa para o percurso. Propõe um reconhecimento: o de que somos feitos do caminho percorrido, das pessoas que elegemos ter ao lado, dos gestos de cuidado que passaram despercebidos, das comunicações que falharam, das janelas pelas quais vimos o mundo pela primeira vez – não seremos nós feitos inteiramente do outro?. O espaço intermédio onde a exposição nos coloca não é um lugar de resposta. É o lugar onde, por um momento, a viagem se inicia de novo - sempre acompanhada, mesmo quando solitária.

In ‘Fear Less’, a track by Fred Again… and Sampha, the main verse repeats almost incessantly: ‘I fear less with you on the passenger side’. Taking this verse as its theme (and partly as its title), this exhibition explores the presence of the other person in the seat beside you during a journey: not as emotional comfort, but as an existential condition. Fear does not disappear: it diminishes. And it diminishes because someone chose to be there (or was chosen?), side by side, amidst the traffic and the night, and the words that were left unsaid. Onfray (2019) would say that this presence presupposes a choice, and that the choice is in itself an act of knowledge. A seat in the car is not taken by chance; it is taken for a reason – even if that reason is only fully realised once the journey has ended.
Passenger Side does not offer a narrative of overcoming adversity, nor a map for the journey. It offers a realisation: that we are made up of the path we have travelled, of the people we have chosen to have by our side, of the gestures of care that went unnoticed, of the communications that failed, of the windows through which we saw the world for the first time – are we not made up entirely of the other? The in-between space where the exhibition places us is not a place of answers. It is the place where, for a moment, the journey begins anew – always accompanied, even when alone.
