In recent years, there has been a surge in games designed by artists. This artistic form of gaming uses interactive storytelling, the creation of alternative worlds, and participation to make complex social themes accessible and relatable. The climate crisis is becoming increasingly tangible, gender and migration issues are dividing our society, and technological developments such as AI raise ethical and social questions. How can games and play serve as a catalyst for social and political change in a world where questions of justice, the future, and technology take center stage?
In the participatory exhibition PLAYTIME!, artists use play to create a space where major topics can be discussed with a younger generation. Various artists employ game mechanics as a tool for reflection, world-building, and social engagement. From moral dilemmas to utopian visions: the artworks in the exhibition invite visitors to think, build, and play along. PLAYTIME! shows us and lets us experience that we can influence the course of the game. In this way, the exhibition hopes to give the younger generation confidence in their creative agency and thus plant a seed for change in our world.
